Q: “I see a lot of people talking about their #oneword. What does it mean to pick a #oneword and how do I select one?”

A: #Opportunity. That’s my word for 2026. It came to me while I was thinking about what I wanted to manifest for my future: something positive and requiring action. There are opportunities around us every day, but the question is: do we notice them or respond to them? When we notice them, what do we do? How can we make the most of every opportunity, regardless of how big or how small it is?

If you’ve been scrolling through social media lately, you’ve likely noticed friends, colleagues, and influencers sharing their #oneword or #OneWord365 posts. This isn’t just another passing trend — it’s a meaningful practice that’s been gaining momentum since around 2009, when the OneWord365 movement began as an alternative to traditional New Year’s resolutions.

The concept is beautifully simple: Instead of creating a long list of resolutions that often get abandoned by February, you choose a single guiding word to shape your focus, decisions, and habits throughout the entire year. This word becomes your North Star, helping you navigate challenges and opportunities with intention. I remember the first time that I saw these posts and was immediately struck by the power of their simplicity. And as a person who considers herself a wordsmith, I toiled to find the just-right word that captured my vision for the year ahead, and a clever show of a word that might have been less accessible to just anyone. Over the years, my approach to determining my #oneword has been the same. As you read on, see if this process works for you.

Why One Word Works When Resolutions Fail

Traditional resolutions often fail because they’re too specific, too rigid, or too focused on outcomes rather than processes. “Lose 20 pounds” or “Get a promotion” can feel overwhelming and create a pass/fail mentality.

Your #oneword, however, operates differently. It’s about identity and direction rather than specific outcomes. When you choose a word like “Courage” or “Growth,” you’re not setting up for failure — you’re creating a lens through which to view all your decisions and actions throughout the year. And this lens is chosen by you and interpreted by you daily. I like to keep a sticky note with my #oneword posted in a visible place so it stays on my radar.

How to Discover Your Perfect Word

Finding your word isn’t about picking something that sounds impressive — it’s about discovering what truly resonates with where you are in life right now and where you want to go. Here’s a practical approach adapted from the OneWord365 community’s guidance:

  1. Envision your future self: Take 10 minutes to write about who you want to be by Dec. 31. Don’t focus on achievements or possessions — think about character traits, relationships, daily habits, and your inner life. What kind of person do you want to become? And what does that honestly look like, feel like, sound like, taste like? You get the picture. Really try to visualize this version of yourself viscerally.
  2. Reflect on the past year: Consider what worked and what didn’t in the previous year. When did you feel most alive, proud, or energized? What drained you? This reflection helps identify what you need more or less of in the coming year. Think about specific moments. What stands out? Why?
  3. Brainstorm without judgment: Write down 10-20 words that come to mind. These can be nouns (Peace), adjectives (Brave), verbs (Create), or even short prepositions (With). Don’t edit yourself—just let the words flow. I find that doing this on paper and not on the computer is most helpful. Sometimes I like to do it in color, and then it is easier for me to start grouping words or ideas later.
  4. Test your shortlist:  Narrow your list to 3-5 strong contenders. For each word, ask yourself:
  • Does this word fit multiple areas of my life (work, relationships, personal growth)?
  • Is it both inspiring and slightly challenging?
  • Can I remember it and act on it daily? What would it look like to do so?

     5. Define what it means to you: Once you’ve chosen your word, give it a personal definition and 3-5 practical behaviors. For example, if your word is “Presence,” you might define it as: “Single-tasking at work, phone-free dinners with family, and 10 minutes of daily mindfulness.” This is important because if you’re choosing the word intentionally, you must know what you intend to do to make it so.

Popular #oneword Choices and Their Meanings

People choose words across various categories:

  • Growth & development: Learn, Stretch, Evolve, Progress, Impact
  • Mindset & wellness: Balance, Mindfulness, Resilience, Rest
  • Relationships: Connect, Listen, Nurture, Boundaries
  • Creativity & work: Create, Focus, Innovate, Systems
  • Character traits: Courage, Grace, Strength, Humility

In years past, I’ve used some of these words. Last year was about balance, and I’ve used words like clarity and metamorphosis as well.

Making Your Word Stick

The magic happens when you move from choosing your word to living it. Here are ways to integrate it into your daily life:

  • Visibility is key: Put your word where you’ll see it regularly—on your phone lock screen, in the bathroom mirror, on your notebook cover, or as a screensaver. As I mentioned, sticky notes work for me, but choose something that will be visible for you.
  • Monthly check-ins: Set a monthly reminder to reflect: How has my word shaped my decisions this month? What opportunities did I notice because of it?
  • Share with community: Using the #oneword or #OneWord365 hashtag connects you with others who’ve chosen similar words, creating a supportive “tribe” that can encourage you throughout the year.

What If You Can’t Decide?

If you’re torn between two words, consider these approaches:

  • Choose a main word and a supporting word.
  • Select one word per quarter.
  • Remember, there’s no perfect choice — pick the word that keeps tapping you on the shoulder.
  • Find a way to combine the words into one phrase or word that really gets specific about your intention.

The Lasting Impact

What makes the #oneword practice so powerful in educational and personal development contexts is its flexibility and depth. Unlike resolutions that box you in, a single word expands your possibilities. It becomes a filter for decision-making, a reminder during challenging moments, and a celebration of growth throughout the year.

As you embark on this journey, remember that your word isn’t a taskmaster — it’s a companion. It won’t judge you for missteps, but it will gently redirect you toward the person you’re becoming.

So take that quiet moment, reflect on what truly matters to you right now, and let your word find you. Then share it with the world using #oneword. You might be surprised by the community waiting to welcome you.

Remember: Your word isn’t about perfection — it’s about intention. Choose wisely, but don’t overthink it. The right word will feel like coming home to yourself.
