About The Grade

The Grade provides independent analysis of media coverage of education news, in order to help promote and improve the quality of the coverage. The effort includes a weekly media column, a free newsletter featuring timely media commentary, and an annual update on newsroom diversity in education journalism. Founder and editor Alexander Russo (pictured) is a longtime education writer, editor, and author. He is a recipient of the Spencer Education Journalism Fellowship at Columbia University, the author of Stray Dogs, Saints, and Saviors, a critically acclaimed book about the attempt to rescue a South Central Los Angeles high school, and the 2018 winner of the Education Writers Association award for opinion journalism. He has launched and edited several education websites over the years, including This Week In Education, District 299, and LA School Report.
