Some of the stories about education journalism we’d love to commission

Each year, many of the most-read and insightful pieces The Grade publishes are by journalists, parents, students, educators, and experts who are passionate and knowledgeable about an issue and how it’s being covered in the media.

And each year, we have a new set of story topics that we’re looking for someone to write about. Some review a big magazine or newspaper article that got a lot of attention. Others take on important issues of race, class, and inequality, or focus on a region or local news outlet where education coverage needs attention.

Here are some of this year’s wish list topics:

🧞 What should education editors and hiring managers do to make their organization more supportive for Black and brown journalists they’ve hired to cover schools?

🧞 One of the most-admired podcasts of 2022, The Trojan Horse Affair depicts the fallout from an anonymous hoax letter accusing British schools of grooming students as Muslim extremists. What are the lessons for journalists from the story and the podcast about what happened?

🧞 What lessons can education journalism learn from the recent efforts to revamp coverage of climate and crime?

🧞 What lessons can education journalism learn from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s “Stop Doing This” list, which freed journalists up to do new things that readers found more useful and important?

We’re always looking for contributors to write about media coverage. No journalism degree or beat experience are required, though we will likely put your through several rounds of editing. Not sure what would be involved? Check out some of our past contributor pieces and send us any questions to thegrade2015@gmail.com.
