What inspires you to keep going in your work?

“What inspires me to keep going in my work is the profound sense of service and growth. Witnessing the growth in my students, the development of our programs, and my own professional and personal growth is incredibly inspiring. I cannot imagine not continuing this journey, as each day brings new opportunities to make a positive impact. Additionally, I have a firm belief that I was made to serve others. This service aspect of my work, where I can contribute to the betterment of individuals and the community, is what fuels my passion and dedication.” PDK Emerging Leader Vanessa Buttler, education & training pathway teacher at Cleburne High School, Cleburne, Texas.

“I am inspired by every opportunity to eliminate barriers for people, regardless of age or background, to reach their goals of becoming certified educators and for disrupting single-story narratives for students and communities. I’m inspired by the radical hope and possibility I experience whenever I can facilitate and co-create opportunities for people to reach their potential. I am inspired by the people I work with and surround myself with, including the students in my programs who keep me focused and grounded.” PDK Distinguished Educator Violet Jiménez Sims, managing director of academic programming at the Connecticut Teacher Residency Program, Hartford.

Why do you want to be a teacher?

“I want to be a teacher because I want to be a magic-maker. While I was in school, my teachers played a huge role in who I became. About two weeks before graduation, a former teacher asked me if I was excited about graduating! I told her that I was, however, Cleburne High is a magical place, and I was not ready to leave it behind. I will never forget what she told me. ‘That’s OK, because before you know it, you will be one of the magic-makers.’ So with that, I strive to create magic for students. I want to change lives like my teachers have done for me.” Educators Rising National President Journey Harris, sophomore, Tarleton State University, Stephensville, Texas.

“I aspire to be a teacher because of the positive influence of my 1st-grade teacher. I want to be a reliable support for students facing difficult times and challenging circumstances. My goal is to be the dependable teacher for my students that I sometimes lacked during my own education.” Educators Rising Vice President of Service Char’Tayvious Edwards, freshman, Meridian Community College, Meridian, Mississippi.
