Over at The Washington Post’s Answer Sheet blog, there are some recollections and regrets from now-retired education journalist John Merrow in (The biggest regret from a 41-year career).
The piece, which comes to us in the form of an interview by James Harvey, executive director of the National Superintendents Roundtable, quotes Merrow observing that it’s “not clear schools have responded as briskly as they should have” to changes in the role of public education, naming the most effective EdSec (Richard Riley “by a landslide”), slamming NCLB (Democrats claiming that they could run education from Washington), dinging tying teacher evaluation to testing (“probably Arne Duncan’s biggest mistake”), lamenting his failure to pry loose a document related to Michelle Rhee and cheating in DCSP, worrying “that schools will remain isolated from the larger society and be expected to solve problems for which they are not equipped.” and predicting (that a major scandal will erupt around charter schools).
